LONGI to provide electrolysers to ACWA Power’s 3,000 tonne hydrogen project

ACWA Power will receive support from LONGI Hydrogen to deliver the first phase of a large-scale hydrogen production project in Uzbekistan.

Expected to produce 3,000 tonnes per year of hydrogen and reduce carbon emissions of up to 136,000 tonnes, the project will utilise LONGI ALK electrolyser stacks in the initial phase.

Once the second phase is complete, H2 View understands the project will boast 2.4GW of wind energy to power the production of 500,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually.

After all phases are completed, the project will be ACWA Power’s second utility-scale green hydrogen project after the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia.

LONGI’s General Director of Manufacture and Overseas Sales, Zhou Wei, claimed it is the first project in Central Asia for the company, as it aims to “drive down the levelised cost of hydrogen and make green hydrogen an affordable energy in the near future.”

Marco Arcelli, ACWA Power CEO, added, “We are proud to be working with our partners to deliver the green hydrogen project, which will make a deep impact on the country’s [Uzbekistan] ambitious energy transition plans.”

ACWA signed a Hydrogen Purchase Agreement (HPA) with the state-owned chemical firm Uzkimyosanoat and a Power Purchase Agreement with the National Power Grid of Uzbekistan last year (2023).

Worth up to $100m combined, the HPA will ensure the offtake of 3,000 tonnes per year for 15 years and the PPA for 52-100MW of renewables capacity for 25 years.
