Masdar and EGA to identify hydrogen aluminium production opportunities

Masdar and Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) have agreed to collaborate on the decarbonisation of aluminium production through hydrogen and other low-carbon alternatives.

As the “largest premium aluminium producer in the world,” EGA wants to decarbonise its operations in the UAE and any future operations. The company produces one in every 25 tonnes of the material made worldwide.

Working with the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company will open doors for EGA, potentially using battery storage or hydrogen production and storage in the production process. The industry itself currently accounts for about 3% of global greenhouse gases.

The two companies will also work together to identify opportunities in which Masdar can support EGA to power new aluminium production facilities with renewable energy sources.

With demand for metal forecasted to grow by 80% by 2050, it is important to fulfil the goal set out by EGA and Masdar, according to Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA.

“EGA’s alliance with Masdar, another UAE industrial champion and a global leader in clean energy, should unlock opportunities to decarbonise our existing operations, including further expanding our production of CelestiAL solar aluminium, and secure low-carbon growth.”

In 2021, EGA became the “first” company worldwide to produce aluminium commercially using solar power, before it produced 66,000 tonnes of CelestiAL solar aluminium last year (2023).

EGA also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Oracle Power to secure the supply and delivery of around 50,000 tonnes of green hydrogen from a Pakistani project, which will be used to decarbonise aluminium production.

Mohamed Al Ramahi, CEO of EGA, said, “Strong partnerships such as this are exactly when the world needs to accelerate our path to Net Zero. When organisations combine their knowledge and resources to help decarbonise vital industries, we not only protect the environment but we also boost the economy.”
