Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has invested in Texan hydrogen technology firm Syzygy Plasmonics through its American subsidiary MHIA.
Founded in 2018, Syzygy’s reactors use light rather than combustion to enable hydrogen production, when powered by renewable electricity, the technology is hoped to both reduce the cost and emissions of chemical reactions.
Allowing used to produce zero-emissions hydrogen from ammonia and low-emissions hydrogen from combustion-free steam methane reforming, the reactor can also offer a means of converting methane and captured carbon dioxide (CO2) into sustainable fuels and methanol.
