New flow-through electrode developed for fast hydrogen production

Researchers at Duke University have been testing three new materials that may be used as porous, flow-through electrodes to improve the efficiency of electrolysis, resulting in faster hydrogen production.

Professor of Chemistry at Duke University, Ben Wiley, along with the rest of his team, conducted the research for more affordable and efficient hydrogen production.

“The maximum rate at which hydrogen is produced is limited by the bubbles blocking the electrode – literally blocking the water from getting to the surface and splitting.”

In a paper, the researchers compared three different configurations of a porous electrode through which the alkaline water can flow the reaction occurs.
