North American companies develop alternative SMR solution for hydrogen production

Nu:ionic Technologies and XRG Technologies have developed an electrified emission-free reactor capable of producing low carbon “Teal Hydrogen.”

The Nu-X Smart Reformer solution will use natural gas, renewable biogas, ammonia or methanol as a feedstock and will eliminate combustion emissions from fired heating processes.

The system will provide an alternative solution to the steam methane reformer (SMR), used in a traditional hydrogen plant, expected to be significantly less expensive, with a compact and modular design that is a fraction of the size of traditional SMRs at similar capacities.

Capable of scaling up to industrial production volumes, the Nu-X Smart Reformer reduces natural gas feedstock requirements by up to 40%, resulting in a significant reduction in combustion emissions, in addition to upstream gas exploration and transmission leakages.
