Norwegian-Danish JV produces first molecules of hydrogen for biogas

Norwegian Hydrogen’s joint venture (JV) Grøn Brint has produced its first molecules of hydrogen from its 2MW Hjørring plant in Denmark.

A 50/50 JV between Norwegian Hydrogen and Jens Peter Lunden and his company JPLL Holding, Grøn Brint plans to produce green hydrogen from the plant to meet the demand for GrønGas’ liquid biogas production.

Another JV of Lunden’s, this time with E.ON, GrønGas plans to combine green hydrogen with biogenic CO2 to produce the biogas for sale in the German market.

Norwegian Hydrogen has confirmed to H2 View the plant can currently produce 900kg of hydrogen per day with its 2MW of electrolysers supplied by H-TEC SYSTEMS but could be expanded to 5MW.

Expecting to reach full production capacity in a “few months,” the company told H2 View the site is only using renewable electricity.

Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen, said the commissioning of the plant’s electrolysers was not just a technical milestone but was a “bold and important step towards realising our vision of a sustainable, decarbonised future.”

Established in March 2023, Norwegian Hydrogen and Lunden initially said the Grøn Brint JV could expand to produce other products e-fuels.

Last month the Norwegian firm started taking deliveries of equipment for its 1.3 tonne-per-day hydrogen hub situated on the banks of the UNESCO World Heritage Geiranger fjord in Hellesylt.
