On the highway to hydrogen: How Nikola is shaping the future of trucking, from vehicle to infrastructure

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Nikola Corporation now stands stronger than ever in the heavy-duty hydrogen mobility market as it continues its mission to integrate next-generation truck technology, hydrogen refuelling infrastructure and maintenance across the globe to reduce the carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions of the trucking sector.

Based in Phoenix, Arizona, the zero-emission truck manufacturer has worked around the clock over the past year to lay the foundations for how the business will look in the future as Nikola looks to build out an entire hydrogen value chain from production to dispensing hydrogen into vehicles. And Nikola has well and truly stayed headstrong and focused since the Hindenburg Research report released in September 2020, and the various headwinds that came with it.

It goes without saying that what was once a small start-up created in a Salt Lake City, Utah basement has now grown far beyond its founder’s wildest dreams, but Nikola’s key company values still stand prominent. The value chain aspect of the Nikola business model is perhaps something that is often forgotten when thinking about the firm. What somebody is most likely to think about first is Nikola’s Class 8 semi-truck portfolio. But the company is so much more than this. When people think Nikola, they need to think beyond the trucks and more about the complete hydrogen infrastructure as a whole, and what that could look like in the future for trucks, a current heavy emitter of carbon emissions worldwide.
