‘Our switch to renewables and hydrogen will make us truly independent of Russia,’ says European Commission President

With countries from around the globe coming together to impose sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, President Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission, spoke of the role hydrogen can have in displacing Russian gas dependency.

Addressing the sanctions and the Russian invasion, Leyen said, “Our investments today will make us more independent tomorrow. I am thinking, first and foremost, about our energy security. We simply cannot rely so much on a supplier that explicitly threatens us.
