Panasonic inks deal with Greater Manchester to deploy hydrogen fuel cell technology

Greater Manchester has signed an agreement with Panasonic to deploy hydrogen fuel cell technology across the region.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, and Mitsutoshi Shigeta, Managing Executive Officer of Panasonic Corporation and Chief Green Transformation Officer (CGXO), signed the agreement on January 15, 2024.

SSE Energy Solutions, Electricity North West, Manchester Metropolitan University, and Carlton Power were also involved in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The partnership will ensure Panasonic’s RE100 technology is deployed at sites throughout Greater Manchester.

RE100 harnesses hydrogen and fuel cells to supply 100% renewable electricity in industrial and public sector settings. The partnership is expected to last five years and support Greater Manchester’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2038.
