EnerVenue has raised $100m in funding to build a gigafactory in the US for its nickel-hydrogen batteries.
The Californian company told H2 View nickel-hydrogen batteries work similarly to a fuel cell – hydrogen is generated as the battery charges and is reabsorbed into water as the battery discharges.
The technology has been used in the space industry for decades including to power the International Space Station and Hubble Space Telescope.
Following breakthrough material science discoveries that significantly reduces the cost and increases the raw material availability of the NASA-originated technology, EnerVenue launched in 2020 to bring the battery to grid-scale and other stationary power applications.
