Plans launched for €60m floating wind turbine and hydrogen production system

A collaboration between Strohm and Lhyfe is aiming to launch the ‘first floating wind turbine with an integrated hydrogen production system’ worth approximately €60m ($56.8m).

Lhyfe’s Nerehyd solution, unveiled today (May 10), worth approximately €60m ($56.8m), incorporates a hydrogen production facility on a floating platform, connected to a wind turbine. The production of the first prototype is planned for 2025.

A signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Strohm and Lhyfe, will see the two companies working on solutions for hydrogen transport onshore and offshore.

French renewable hydrogen supplier Lhyfe is expected to provide topside electrolysers while Dutch-based Thermoplastic Composite Pipe (TCP) manufacturer Strohm will connect its pipelines, claimed to be corrosion-resistant and flexible, for safe hydrogen transfer.

Marc Rousselet, Director Offshore Deployment at Lhyfe, said, “Lhyfe is looking at securing the entire value chain, from the production of the renewable hydrogen offshore to the supply at end-customers’ sites. This includes controlling the transport of the hydrogen from the offshore production asset to shore.

“Lhyfe has demonstrated the market exists and it has a high potential for growth and, with this partnership with Strohm, we aim to access a wide range of ambitious projects around the world.”

H2 View understands the concept can be adapted for on/off-grid applications as well as single turbines to large-scale wind farm developments.

Martin van Onna, CEO at Strohm seemed confident that the pipeline technology will contribute greatly to offshore renewables. Van Onna commented, “We share the same vision that renewable hydrogen will be an important part of the transition from fossil fuel.

“Lhyfe’s extensive renewable hydrogen expertise coupled with Strohm’s superior pipeline solutions will enable the rapid acceleration of safe offshore wind-to-hydrogen projects by providing more reliable and cost-effective solutions.”
