PosHYdon begins testing ahead of offshore hydrogen production in Q4

The PosHYdon pilot project has started onshore testing for the first time at InVesta’s facility in Alkmaar, the Netherlands.

Following the onshore testing period, the electrolyser will be transferred offshore to the Q13a-A platform, 13km off the coast of Scheveningen, The Hague. The first offshore production of hydrogen is expected in Q4 2024.

The pilot aims to produce green hydrogen on an operational gas platform, with three offshore energy systems integrated to allow for the transport of hydrogen and gas to land via an existing pipeline. The facility is capable of converting seawater into demineralised water to produce hydrogen via electrolysis.

Nel Hydrogen announced in 2021 that it would provide a 1MW PEM electrolyser to the project, capable of producing 500kg of green hydrogen per day. The 1MW electrolyser will follow the wind profile of the Luchterduinen wind farm.

René Peters, Business Director Gas Technologies TNO and initiator of the North Sea Energy Program, said, “Offshore green hydrogen production will enable large-scale wind farms to be developed far out at sea. Wind energy is directly converted to green hydrogen from demineralised seawater and can be transported through the existing or new gas infrastructure.

“As a result, offshore wind projects can be realised faster at significantly lower costs for society. I am therefore very happy that we can now test the complete installation onshore, in preparation for transferring it offshore for the final test: offshore green hydrogen production.”

PosHYdon will also participate in a pilot for Guarantees of Origin for green hydrogen and the future migration towards European hydrogen certification.

The project is being developed with support from Nel, TNO, Nexstep, Gasunie, Eneco, DEME Offshore NL, NOGAT, NGT B.V., InVesta, TAQA Group, Hatenboer, lv, Emerson and Automation Solutions. Neptune Energy is the operator of the Q13a-A platform, along with EBN and TAQA Offshore.
