UPDATED: €250m awarded to Dutch hydrogen projects totalling 101MW of electrolysis capacity

RWE will be backed with €124.9m ($133m) to advance its green hydrogen production project in Eemshaven, the Netherlands, as part of a wider €250m ($267m) funding round.

The planned 50MW electrolysis plant is expected to save more than 250,000 tonnes of CO2 once it comes online in 2027. RWE plans to make a financial investment decision (FID) by the end of 2024.

In addition to RWE, six other projects totalling 101MW of electrolysis capacity have been selected for funding in the first subsidy round by The Netherlands Agency Enterprise (RVO). H2 Hollandia, Hysolar, GroenGas’ assets in Amsterdam and Groningen, Van Kessel Olie and VoltH2 will share the remaining $134m.

An environmental and building permit has already been secured for the Eemshydrogen project and RWE is now in contact with potential off-takers. Construction and equipment suppliers will be contacted following an FID.

Of the 101MW electrolysis capacity set to receive funding, 91MW comes from projects in the province of Groningen, such as VoltH2’s Difzijl project.

Sopna Sury, COO Hydrogen RWE Generation, said, “By supplying clean hydrogen, for example to the transport sector and chemical plants, our Eemshaven site will help reduce carbon emissions of industrial companies in north western Europe.”

RWE is planning to invest €55bn ($58bn) to expand its green hydrogen portfolio to 65GW across the globe by 2030, with 2GW of electrolysis capacity in its core markets.

The company recently announced it will develop a green hydrogen production facility in Essex, the UK, in collaboration with Haltermann Carless (HCS).

An electrolyser will be introduced to HCS’ site, however the amount of green hydrogen they plan to produce has not been confirmed.
