SIAD MI launches high-pressure, oil-free compressor for hydrogen refuelling

Italy’s SIAD Macchine Impianti (SIAD MI) has launched a new 550-bar, oil-free compressor for hydrogen refuelling stations.

Designed to “meet the needs” of transportation and hydrogen refuelling, SIAD MI hopes to position itself as a leading player in the clean mobility supply chain.

Developed for use in heavy-duty vehicle hydrogen refuelling stations, the SIAD Group company said the compressor’s high-pressure, oil-free, strong safety focus, low maintenance cycles and low energy consumption were important factors in reducing operating costs.

Sandeep Gadkary, Manager of the Compressors Division and Global Service Division at SIAD MI, said, “Our customers can rely on us to provide solutions that keep downtime to a minimum, ensuring continuous, trouble-free production.”

The new compressor comes as various regions look to accelerate the deployment of heavy-duty hydrogen-powered vehicles to clean up transportation.

Last year (2023), Europe adopted legislation that would see hundreds of hydrogen refuelling stations deployed across the continent.

The Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) mandates that hydrogen refuelling stations serving both light- and heavy-duty vehicles must be deployed in all “urban nodes” and every 200km along the core Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) by 2030.

Paolo Ferrario, General Manager of SIAD MI, said the company understands the importance of providing solutions that help reduce carbon emissions.

“We are fully committed to playing a key role in this transformation,” Ferrario added.

SIAD MI has supplied hydrogen compressor technology for various green hydrogen projects.

Norwegian electrolyser OEM Nel in 2023 ordered three compressors that would be combined with a 20MW electrolyser plant that would supply green hydrogen to Ovako’s steel rolling mill in Sweden.
