South Africa preparing for hydrogen economy

South Africa will trial powering more than 200 homes in KwaZulu-Natal with hydrogen as part of plans to build a hydrogen economy.

The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Blade Zaimande, revealed the news last week in his department budget speech.

“Later this year, through the HySA programme (the country’s dedicated hydrogen research programme), we will be collaborating with the Department of Energy, iLembe District Municipality, global fuel cell manufacturers, and local black-owned companies to power over 200 households in a rural community in KwaZulu-Natal using HySA-generated intellectual property,” he explained.

Zaimande said a lot of progress has been made in preparing the country for a hydrogen economy and HySA has resulted in the establishment of spin-out companies whose products are attracting market interest.
