South Australia signs potential green hydrogen offtake agreement with steel producer

GFG Alliance has signed an agreement with the South Australian Government to explore offtaking green hydrogen from a 250MW electrolyser to support decarbonising iron and steel production.

Liberty Steel and Mining – a company within the GFG group – currently mines iron ore in Australia’s Middleback Ranges, 60km from the Whyalla Steelkworks, which under the agreement could be transformed to low-carbon operations.

Sanjeev Gupta, Executive Chairman of GFG Alliance, said the agreement gave confidence to ramp up efforts to establish a “state-of-the-art” green iron and green steel plant which he said will be “powered by renewable energy and green hydrogen.”
