Storage innovation and smart fuel stations can solve the compression issue

Compression issues at hydrogen refuelling stations can be managed better by using Type IV carbon fibre storage in innovative buffering systems. These innovative systems can be combined in future with a new smart filling approach to mitigate operational challenges and ensure the safe refuelling of all hydrogen vehicles in future.

Managing differences in pressure levels between ground storage systems and the tanks in hydrogen-powered vehicles has always presented challenges. Hydrogen is generally transported to site at 300 bar as this is the pressure which meets total-cost-of-ownership requirements in balancing weight and volume. But it then needs to be compressed, to be stored at higher pressure for vehicle filling. Achieving higher pressure in ground storage requires high performance compression solutions which can be expensive to provide and often need to be run constantly.

Using CFRP for storage system innovation

An alternative, better approach is to use buffer systems, sited between ground storage and the vehicle. The tanks in the buffer system hold gas at a pressure that is closer to the requirement of visiting vehicles. In the past, steel type 2 pressure vessels have sometimes been used to provide this step, enabling pressure changes to be managed progressively. In this way, you can de-couple the filling event from the performance of your compressor.
