Sunfire to undertake FEED study for 500MW alkaline electrolyser project planned for 2028

Sunfire will conduct a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study for a European 500MW hydrogen project.

The German electrolyser manufacturer will support the unnamed European developer and allow it to take a “transparent, comprehensive financial investment decision (FID) for the project.”

Under the agreement, Sunfire will define operational parameters, site requirements, and execution guidelines with integration partners (EPCs) for the 500MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser.

Solar and wind infrastructure will supply renewable power to the hydrogen production project, which is expected to begin operations in 2028.

Europe is at the “forefront of adopting green hydrogen solutions,” according to Nils Aldag, the Sunfire CEO.

“We are seeing the first 100MW projects reaching their FIDs,” he added. “As larger-scale projects like this 500MW initiative emerge, Sunfire reaffirms its commitment to providing reliable industrial electrolyser technology, capable of facilitating transformative projects.

“With the projects we are bringing to life this year, we are building a strategic and efficient partner network – gaining the experience that will enable us to deliver electrolysis systems scaled up to several hundreds of megawatts.”

Last August (2023), Sunfire secured a contract to supply a 100MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser to a European refinery. This order included the purchase of 10 Sunfire models, each with 10MW of capacity, along with power supply units.
