Take 5: An interview with… Pascal Pewinski, CEO of AREVA H2Gen

Thanks for giving H2 View your time. Tell us a little about AREVA H2Gen, it’s origins and its product portfolio…

AREVA H2Gen was created in 2014 and is the result of the merger of two R&D companies specialised in PEM electrolysers. Today we offer a range of PEM water electrolysers from 50 kW to 1 MW and its multiples up to 5 MW. Furthermore we are developing the elementary stack cells to address the demand of multiples of 10 MW electrolysis plants.

So the company spans both the traditional hydrogen business and the ‘newer’ hydrogen energy sector – has it been interesting to see this new space evolve?

The ‘traditional’ hydrogen business for electrolysers is a very specific niche market essentially in the alternator power plant cooling business, with electrolysers of small capacities. The ‘new’ hydrogen energy sector, offers a great business opportunity with equipment’s of very large capacities. Within 10 years the market perspective has moved from the electrolyser for hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS’), to plants with very large capacities in order to decarbonise the carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint of hydrogen in the industry.
