Tata Cummins inaugurates Indian hydrogen ICE manufacturing facility

Tata Cummins has inaugurated a new hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) manufacturing facility in India.

Located in Jamshedpur, the near-seven-acre site will produce hydrogen-fuelled ICEs for medium and heavy commercial vehicles and other low-emission technology products in India.

Established by Tata Cummins subsidiary TCPL GES, which was formed in March 2023, the plant’s opening comes less than a year after the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State of Jharkhand.

US-based Cummins and India’s Tata Motors have worked together since 1993 through the 50:50 Tata Cummins joint venture (JV). Through the JV’s subsidiary, the pair hope to design and develop low- and zero-emission propulsion technologies for the Indian commercial vehicle market.

With Cummins being a firm backer of hydrogen-fuelled ICEs playing a significant role in decarbonising heavy-duty transport, Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, said hydrogen-based powertrains would “shape the future of mobility in India.”

Having released a 15-litre hydrogen ICE in May 2022, Cummins revealed a medium-duty ICE-powered truck concept at the IAA Transportation exhibition in Hanover, Germany, just months later.

Integrated into a Mercedes-Benz Arego truck, the 290hp Cummins B6.7H engine used a 700-base hydrogen storage system to offer up to 500km in range.

Tata Motors last year (2023) also unveiled a new R&D facility to develop hydrogen ICEs and hydrogen storage and dispensing technology in Pune, India.
