TE H2 formed to explore hydrogen production and distribution from Tunisia to Europe

TotalEnergies has agreed to collaborate on the development of a large green hydrogen project, set to potentially produce one million tonnes of hydrogen per year in Tunisia.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed with the Republic of Tunisia to form TE H2 – a joint venture (JV) between TotalEnergies and EREN Groupe, alongside Verbund. During its initial phase, “H2 Notos” will produce 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

The initiative will produce hydrogen via electrolysers powered by large onshore wind and solar projects, and it will be supplied with desalinated sea water. H2 Notos will export hydrogen using pipelines to the European market, utilising the SoutH2 Corridor which connects North Africa to Italy, Austria and Germany and is expected to be commissioned by around 2030.

TE H2, alongside Verbund, will lead the development, financing, construction and operation of H2 Notos. Verbund, Austria’s leading electricity company, will coordinate the transport of produced hydrogen towards central Europe.

David Corchia has been appointed to CEO of TE H2. He said, “H2 Notos has the potential to become a significant supplier of green hydrogen for Europe while fostering significant jobs creation in Tunisia.

“We are entering into a phase of greenfield development and major technical work to access the feasibility of the project, and we will need to further deepen the highly constructive and fruitful collaboration we have enjoyed with the national and local authorities through H2 Notos.”

Verbund’s CEO, Michael Strugl, added, “Tunisia is a particularly important upstream region in terms of scalability and competitiveness and a significant part of Verbund’s hydrogen plans.

“By combining competitive hydrogen production in Tunisia and pipeline-based transportation, we can ensure a long-term supply at scale to support a sustainable transition of our customers to green hydrogen as well as support a sustainable economic development in Tunisia.”
