The EU and UK has sufficient potential to reach its hydrogen demand of 2,300TWh by 2050, report says

A new study conducted by the European Backbone initiative has estimated that the EU and UK has sufficient potential to reach its hydrogen demand of 2,300TWh by 2050.

This figure equals around 45% of the EU and UK’s natural gas consumption in 2019 symbolising the radical scale in which hydrogen is set to ramp up in the coming years.

Hydrogen has been identified as a crucial fuel source to decarbonise much of Europe’s industry, in particular chemicals, iron and steel, and fuel production.
