Time is a challenge for hydrogen-powered vessels, says AVL Chief Engineer

Tomas Dehne, Chief Engineer Fuel Cell Testing Technology at AVL, discussed the efficiency of fuel cell technology in the maritime industry in H2 View’s Maritime Mobility Webinar.

After being asked, ‘why hydrogen’, Dehne said time ‘is a challenge’ for hydrogen-powered vessels, therefore meaning methanol and LNG are good transition technologies to bridge the time it takes to utilise the effectiveness of fuel cell technology.

“We believe that the technology with the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) will make the race on the long run, if the technology capabilities match the application needs.
