TotalEnergies seeks 500,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year for European refineries

French oil and gas major TotalEnergies is looking to secure a supply of 500,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year to decarbonise its European refineries by 2030.

Having today (September 14) launched a call of tenders, the company is looking to decarbonise its six refineries in Belgium, Germany, Netherlands and France, as well as its two biorefineries in France, all of which currently use grey hydrogen.

Looking to replace the 500,000 tonnes of grey hydrogen consumed across the refineries per year with green hydrogen the end of the decade, the energy player says it comes as a major step in achieving its objective of reducing the net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions directly linked to its oil and gas operations by 40% by 2030, compared to 2015 levels.
