Uniper will explore porous rock formations as hydrogen storage

Uniper Energy Storage has launched the HyStorage research project which will test Bierwang porous rock storage’s feasibility as a hydrogen storage facility.

The project will investigate the influence of hydrogen on porous rock formations which will determine the feasibility and integrity of pore storage facilities to store hydrogen.

For the research project, a specialised gas-technical unit was set up on a designated drilling site at Uniper Bierwang site in Germany. The commissioning of the project now in progress and the first hydrogen is expected to be injected from September onwards, with the project now being approved by the Southern Bavarian Mining Authority.
