Universal Hydrogen moves closer towards aircraft conversion to hydrogen certification

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued Universal Hydrogen a G-1 issue paper – a key step in establishing the certification criteria for the company’s design for converting an ATR 72 aircraft to run on hydrogen.

Having accepted Universal Hydrogen’s application to convert ATR 72 regional airliners to run on liquid hydrogen and fuel cells-electric propulsion, the FAA G-1 Issue paper includes tailoring of applicable airworthiness and environmental standards required by the FAA to certify the ATR 72 conversion to hydrogen.

Universal Hydrogen has said it is now working with the FAA to finalise the full set of certification requirements.
