Vattenfall drops offshore hydrogen production plans a year ahead of operations

Vattenfall has cancelled its Hydrogen Turbine 1 (HT1) production project located off the coast of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Following the development phase for decentralised offshore hydrogen production, and “in light of other industry advances,” the company has decided to conclude the project, which H2 View understands was set to begin operations next year (2025).

Vattenfall told H2 View that an electrolyser was never connected to an offshore wind turbine to produce hydrogen and said the company shifted its focus away from production as it wasn’t an “efficient use of resources.”

However, the project, located at Vattenfall’s European Offshore Wind Development Centre, supported the creation of a new UK Government regulatory and consenting regime for offshore hydrogen transportation and storage.
