Wales & West Utilities to explore green hydrogen production from lower quality water

UK-based Wales & West Utilities (WWU), with Hydrostar, is exploring low-carbon hydrogen production from lower quality water.

In a feasibility study, funded by UK energy regulator Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund, WWU will explore how using less-pure water, primarily harvested rainwater, could lower operational barriers and reduce the cost of green hydrogen production.

Currently, green hydrogen, produced through water electrolysis, requires purified water. Stephen B. Harrison, writing for H2 View earlier this year (2023), said, “Impurities such as calcium ions in the water will rapidly damage a PEM electrolyser membrane due to the interaction with the catalyst coating. Alkaline electrolysers also have sensitivities to poisons in the water.”
