Why fuel cells are no longer the wallflowers: The road to decarbonising transport

As the electrification of transportation continues to accelerate with lithium-ion battery solutions leading the way, are the right technological and strategic decisions being made?  It has often been repeated that fuel cell systems are best applied to commercial vehicles where range, payload and extensive usage are key. These decisive considerations remain extremely valid factors and should be where the fuel cell industry’s main focus lies. However, equally valid is the following point: with the rapid industrialisation of the key building blocks of the hydrogen ecosystem, are we fast approaching a tipping point where hybrid solutions combining fuel cells with battery technology become the true norm, and with far wider coverage of transport applications?

The background

EH Group Engineering was established in 2017 in Switzerland by Dr. Mardit Matian. With over 20 years’ experience in the sector of fuel cells, he wanted to pursue an alternative pathway to the progression and commercialisation of this key technology. Co-founder Christopher Brandon shared this vision and brought his experience from the finance and asset management sector to secure a sufficient runway for a multi-year critical path development.
