Australia must plan for massive renewables growth to unlock future manufacturing boom

This month’s column from Dr. Fiona Simon, CEO of the Australian Hydrogen Council (AHC) is in the form of her speech from the Australia Hydrogen Conference (West) on December 5-6, 2022, which details the state-of-play and the key actions fundamental to mobilising the hydrogen industry.

Welcome to Western Australia. How great it is to have our hydrogen conference in a state that has such an ambitious hydrogen strategy. A state that has huge potential to be a world leading exporter of hydrogen and its derivatives, such as ammonia.

On a national scale, there have been some notable developments since we all gathered in Adelaide in May. Importantly, a new Federal Government with policy commitments that move us in the right direction. Most recently, we have the introduction of the A$15bn ($10bn) National Reconstruction Fund which could change the game for domestic manufacturing.
