Darwin Hub to enable the development of an interconnected hydrogen industry through new potential partnership

The Darwin Hub could enable the development of an interconnected hydrogen industry across the Northern Territory and Australia as the local government and CSIRO partner to boost investment.

With the partnering, the two groups will outline a joint business case that will look to expand the hub into a central cluster for zero-emission technology and carbon capture utilisation and storage.

In doing so, this could enable the development of a large-scale hydrogen cluster in the Darwin Hub with investment set to increase and fast-track emissions reductions.

This could send ripples throughout multiple industries with a boost to economic growth, jobs and giving further opportunities to decarbonise domestic industry.

The hub could also potentially be used for exporting hydrogen overseas with the Darwin Port nearby.

In addition to this, the hub would also be key in establishing the Territory’s Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct which will be a globally competitive precinct for low emission petrochemicals, renewable hydrogen and minerals processing.

Michael Gunner, Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, said, “The Northern Territory is a natural fit for this investment. We are home to world-class natural gas and solar resources and subsurface carbon dioxide storage capacity, and we are on the doorstep of key international energy export markets.

“We are always looking ahead – to future investment and job creating opportunities –we will ensure the Comeback Capital is on the front foot when it comes to low emissions economic growth and expanding industry in a net zero emissions world.

“We are committed to working to identify ways to rapidly decarbonise existing energy supplies whilst attracting future zero emission industries to the Territory.”
