Ferngas and Stahlwerk Thüringen sign MoU to connect steel mill to hydrogen network

German network operator Ferngas and Stahlwerk Thüringen have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to connect with the hydrogen network.

Under the MoU, Stahlwerk’s Unterwellenborn plant in Thuringia, Germany, will be connected to the hydrogen network from 2027, following the planning and technical preparation of the connection.

The company’s steel mill will used purchased green hydrogen via the grid infrastructure, which will gradually replace the natural gas used in production steps. To begin with, hydrogen will account for more than half of the previous volume of natural gas.
