Japanese research team successfully achieve direct power generation from MCH using SOFC

Researchers at the Waseda University in Japan have revealed the successful generation of electricity from methylcyclohexane (MCH) using solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC).

MCH is a type of organic hydride, which can safely and efficiently transport and store hydrogen due to its ability to remain liquid at room temperature, its low toxicity and it has a higher hydrogen density than high-pressure hydrogen.

The results of the project indicated that the MCH reacts with the conducting oxygen ions in the SOFC to generate electricity, therefore meaning power can be generated from MCH and the energy required for direct power generation is less than what is required in a conventional catalyst-assisted dehydrogenation reaction of MCH.
