Plans for deep-sea vessels with fuel cell and ammonia cracking tech revealed

TECO 2030 and Pherousa Green Shipping (PGS) have teamed up to supply up to six zero-emission Ultramax dry bulk carrier vessels, each equipped with ammonia cracking technology and 12MW of hydrogen fuel cells for the main propulsion.

Each vessel, expected to be around 63,000 deadweight tonnes, will be equipped with a 12MW TECO 2030 fuel cell system, combined with Pherousa Green Technologies’ (PGT) ammonia to hydrogen cracker technology.

It is hoped by bunkering ammonia and then cracking it into hydrogen onboard, the ships will solve storage and infrastructure challenges associated with hydrogen, while allowing ship owners to kick-off zero-emissions deep shipping with ammonia and transition to hydrogen when suitable.
