Portugal to develop the Port of Sines in a green hydrogen hub; partner country for Hannover Messe 2022

Portugal will promote the use of green hydrogen through becoming an official a sponsor for Hannover Messe 2022 in which the nation is striving to play a key role in the international hydrogen market.

To support Portugal’s transition to hydrogen technologies, several key areas will be explored to create a booming ecosystem for the clean energy carrier and accelerate its adoption.

One development in Portugal aims to develop the Port of Sines in a hydrogen hub with it to boast an electrolyser capacity of 2.5GW by 2030 and 265MW in 2025.

From this green hydrogen hub, the clean energy carrier will be distributed around the nation through its modern and extensive natural gas grid that, on average, is less than 15 years old and spans 19,000km.

Made almost entirely of polyethylene, this makes the pipelines much better suited for transporting hydrogen.

As well as this, Portugal is targeting the creation of between 50 and 100 hydrogen refuelling stations by 2030 in a bid to boost hydrogen adoption in the transportation sector.

Portugal is a Partner Country for Hannover Messe 2022 and, under the motto “Portugal Makes Sense”, Portugal will present itself at the exhibition as well as in forums and seminars.

The focus is on industrial supply, digital platforms and energy solutions – areas that offer many synergies between Portugal and Germany and generate potential for new partnerships.
