Yamaha demonstrates hydrogen-powered golf cart

Yamaha Motor Corporation demonstrated its hydrogen-powered golf car for the first time at its facility in Kennesaw, Georgia.

The company showcased the golf cart at the Yamaha Marine Innovation Centre, following a meeting with the Georgia Hydrogen Energy Braintrust, an organisation working with local businesses, public and private partners to advance the state’s hydrogen economy.

The vehicle concept was first unveiled in January (2024), featuring two high pressure, 25 litre hydrogen tanks positioned under the driver’s seat and on the back of the rear seat.

“Yamaha is exploring many ways to become carbon neutral, and hydrogen is one of the solutions we feel could be viable for very specific products including golf cars and larger marine outboard motors,” explained Ben Speciale, President Yamaha US Marine Business Unit.

“Working with other businesses and leaders in the state allows us to learn more about the challenges associated with the hydrogen distribution infrastructure.”

Tim Echols, Georgia Public Service Commissioner, added, “It’s important for us to be able to test this technology, and Yamaha’s willingness to do this on a small scale within its product lines will help us move forward successfully as we continue to explore generation, demand, use, delivery, storage, chemicals, materials and transportation of hydrogen.”

There are over 400 golf courses in Georgia, including 212 public, 61 municipal and 159 private.
